December is a resting month in my Mid-Atlantic garden, which is convenient as it is not a resting month in any other part of my life. The holiday season – frantic and beautiful – occupies a lot of thought.
This means that, yes, I may be doing tasks in the garden such as planting last-minute bulbs, (I’ve just ordered again from the last-minute sales), tidying up summer’s tomato cages and trellises, or re-organizing the potting shed; but I will firmly categorize these tasks as “extra” to be undertaken only if I feel called to them.
Well, maybe not the bulbs – I’m on borrowed time.
I hope that you can find a beautiful happy medium this month, where the garden acts as a natural backdrop to all that’s going on inside your home. Perhaps it can add to the festivities with bough, branch or berry.
If you’d like to take on some wreath making this year, may I humbly suggest you read this first, and save yourself a lot of frustration. And if you’re thinking about saving those amaryllis after their December debut, here are a few honest thoughts about the process from my other writing home at GardenRant.
A warm and merry month to you all!
