It’s garden tour time folks, and for those in Central Maryland or Northern Virginia, this one is right in our backyard. For over twenty years, the Frederick, Maryland Beyond the Garden Gates tour has attracted gardeners and non-gardeners alike to a terrific line-up of public and private gardens. I’ll attend many private tours over the next few months, but I’m always thrilled to attend well-organized tours that showcase several gardens in a walkable space.
For those who live a little further away than my 20 minute drive, Frederick is a great destination city for antiquing, boutique shopping, eating, wine and beer tasting and (my very favorite) strolling the length of Carroll Creek – a pedestrianized waterway with a European canal-city feel. Add a garden tour in the morning and you’ll be hard pressed to find a better day out.
This year, the kitchen garden at chef Brian Voltaggio’s celebrated restaurant VOLT adds its garden to the list of eleven other private and public Edens. Think ahead with reservations and you might be able to find out what all the fuss is about.
Tickets, directions and more information can be found at Celebrate Frederick’s website.
